Minerva Academy couldn’t have asked for a more electrifying start to their Gothia Cup 2025 campaign, crushing Skoftebyns IF 7–1 in their tournament opener. The Indian side’s trademark flair, pace, and pressing were on full display as they stamped their authority from the very first whistle on Swedish soil.
Founded in 1950, Skoftebyns IF is a renowned grassroots club based in Trollhättan, Sweden, known for its robust youth development and community-driven football culture. Competing in Swedish leagues and regularly fielding teams in top international tournaments like Gothia, Skoftebyns have built a reputation for discipline and structured football.
Beating such a side in their own backyard, and by this margin, is testament to the quality Minerva brings to this global platform.
This wasn’t just a win — it was a statement. Chetan T. opened the floodgates early in the 12th minute, before Raj and Chetan Singh added to the tally with quickfire goals in the 18th, 20+9’, and 25th minutes. However, the star of the second half was MD Azam Khan, who ran riot with a sensational hat-trick — striking in the 32nd, 34th, and 38th minutes — showing his predatory instinct in front of goal and putting the game well beyond doubt.
Despite conceding once in the second half, Minerva’s backline was largely solid and unbothered throughout, marshalled effectively and denied Skoftebyns any chance to gain momentum.
The Gothia Cup is the World’s Largest Youth Football Tournament and is often called the Youth World Cup. It is a legendary event that has seen over one million participants from 151 nations since its inception in 1975.
Played across 140+ pitches in Gothenburg, this year’s edition features 1,943 teams, from 76 nations, with over 4,862 matches over a single week, making it a challenge with only one unifying passion: Football.
Gothia Cup isn’t just a tournament — it’s a global celebration of youth football, culture, and dreams. For Minerva Academy to compete here is prestigious. To dominate in this fashion is exceptional.
Minerva is no stranger to this global platform — they are former Gothia Cup winners, and their intent to reclaim the crown is evident. With a perfect blend of individual brilliance, tactical discipline, and collective hunger, the Indian contingent looks more than ready to make waves yet again.
With opponents like Stensatra FC, Skoftebyns IF, and LB-07 in their group, the warriors return to action tomorrow to face LB-07, another formidable Swedish side. As the competition tightens and challenges grow tougher, Minerva will be keen to maintain momentum, build on their spectacular start, and continue marching towards glory.
